MTO Licensing Process for Driving Instructor Applicants

  1. Visit DriveTest for the DI Kit

The first step of this process is to visit any DriveTest location, pay the application fees to the MTO for your Driving Instructor license. At this time, DriveTest will check your license to ensure you have the required 4 years of experience and no demerit points.

  2. G1 Written Test

At DriveTest, you will repeat your G1 written test. You have a MAXIMUM of 2 attempts for this test, failing twice means you have to wait 1 full year to re-attempt.

  3. Police Check

Once you have passed your G1 test, you must get a Level II Criminal records check (CRJM) from your local police department. This is then submitted to MTO either by dropping it off at DriveTest, or preferably mailing the check to MTO directly via registered mail at:

    Ministry of Transportation
Driver Improvement Office, Driver Control Section
Attn: Driving Instructor Vulnerable Sector Check
77 Wellesley Street West Box 671
    Toronto, ON M7A 1N3

Please ensure you keep a copy of your police check (you must submit the original). You can call the Driver Control office at 1-800-303-4993 to check if they have received and processed it 3 weeks after it is delivered to them.

  4. G Driving Test

You will repeat your G road test. You have a MAXIMUM of 2 attempts for this test, failing twice means you have to wait 1 full year to re-attempt.

  5. MTO-Approved Instructor Course

This is where we meet you! Once you have completed the rest of the requirements, you can join our course. Once the course is completed, we sign off on your instructor kit, and you have completed the licensing steps!
